I wanted to design and build a durable and dexterous glove, a
glove that will work when wet but dries fast. A glove that
accomplished guides like Lance Kronberger and Brian Martin could
rely on. I knew Toray's Primeflex 274g/m2 4-Way Stretch Soft Shell
fabric was the right material for the body and back of the glove.
But I needed to find a material to protect from falls in the rocks,
as well as against bushwhacking and the other tough technical work
that punishes the palm and fingers of a glove.
My research led me to the ice climbing industry. Ice Climbers deal
with many of the same issues, requirements, and abuses as Mountain
Hunters. The best technical ice climbing gloves use Goatskin Oiltac
leather produced by Pittards Leather Company. Pittards, based in
Yeovil, England has been a purveyor of fine leathers since 1826.
Pittards' superior leather comes from Ethiopia and other sub
tropical regions. This thin, tough leather has a structure which
gives it both strength and dexterity, and which makes for a
fantastically hard-wearing and comfortable glove.
The KUIU Guide Glove uses Pittards Oiltac leather on the palm,
fingers, and fingertips to ensure durability, dexterity and
protection. The body and back of the glove, made with Primeflex 274
g/m2 Soft Shell, has been treated with Toray's Kudos DWR for water
resistance and breathability. After 90 days of guiding in the Guide
Glove, Lance is still on his original pair.
